Project Feature: Tetra Data Centres – Dublin & Cork

The MODULA team worked on many projects last year and all of them were important. But two projects in particular stand out as having a different level of importance, due the nature of the service they provide.

TETRA Ireland was commissioned by the Irish government and designed to provide a world class critical communications network, for use by the Irish emergency services. Users of the network include An Garda Síochána, the National Ambulance Service, Dublin Fire Brigade, Irish Coast Guard, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Irish Prison Service, Eirgrid, the Irish Naval Service, Inland Fisheries Ireland, the Office of Public Works (OPW), Irish Water, and ESB Networks. When it comes to important projects, it doesn’t get much more ‘mission critical’.

MODULA worked with global multi-disciplinary consulting engineers Cundall at design stage, to plan for a power and lighting system that would be robust and dependable for TETRA data centres in Dublin and Cork. “Above all else, what I look for in a partner/supplier is reliability, technical knowledge, and meeting deadlines no matter what”, said Murthi Botcha, Senior Engineer at Cundall Ireland.

MODULA took the brief seriously and provided the overhead STARLINE Track Busway® system to distribute power to the data aisles. Specifically designed for mission critical environments, and designed to meet the rugged specification of IEC 61439, the system allows for ‘hot-swapping’ tap-offs without powering down the line. This was an essential requirement as no downtime could be allowed in the data centres’ ongoing operation.

Also allowed for in the design were energy efficient, linear MODULA LED luminaires and a lighting control system, to switch lights off in areas not in use and thereby save energy.

Logistically, the project delivery was demanding. But despite global supply chain challenges and component shortages, the projects were delivered on time and to the high standards expected by both the consulting engineer and the client. All things considered, they were projects the MODULA team can be proud of.
